Rehearsal footage of my first go at an original jazz ballad. Written for my love and for everyone who's ever wanted a love song about real love and all it's ...
Cori and the Music added 2 new photos.
In a bizarre but happy accident, I completed my album artwork in 5 minutes. I was sitting in bed when I suddenly felt the urge to work on the album cover. I sat down with a ball point pen to sketch out some ideas for the album cover and I walked away from the bed for a moment where I had left the pen and my paper. In the moment I was gone, Charleston, trusty trouble and pen loving dog, got ahold of the pen and chewed off the end.
I love the way that pen moves so I figured fuck it, I'll try and sketch with it anyways.
When I started to sketch some vague ideas, suddenly the pen started bleeding, crying and forming its own structures- large ink dots falling onto the paper beneath me. After each stroke I would purposefully make in an effort to draw a clear and distinct element, the pen would offer a less clear, more abstract but infinitely more suggestive idea from my fingertips- the black ink deep and committing.
Suddenly it occurred to me that ALL of what was happening was SO perfect for this album.
My photographer and I created a different photo representing a different part of my story and self for each song. I've been trying to figure out how to patch each of those pieces together in one piece. Which, ironically, is completely the entire theme of the album.
The album entitled "Who Am I?" was a story-telling and creative journey of self reconciliation, discovery, and realization that I'm allowed to be more than one thing. I can be big and loud, I can be soft and quiet, I can be masculine, feminine, old, young, happy, hurt. I can sound any way I want to sound.
As an artist there always seems to be this struggle (birthed from expectation) to find oneness and fluidity in One's sound. Define your genre, define your artistic stance, define your brand, define your sound. Welp, after 30 something years in the arts, I realized how over I was in trying to pigeon-hole anything. I started in classical and gospel, I went to pop, then rock and alternative, then singer-songwriter and folk, and returned to my deep love of Blues, Soul, Motown and also all of female artists that bled intelligence and emotion in their stuff that I adored as a preteen and teen. I've been ALL of these things in my soul- so why can't I just be all of these things.....oh, wait- I can. I'd gotten so far from standing up for that.
I wrote whatever I wanted to write and worked with those closest to me to talk about the life I wanted each story to have, the life each story I honored on this album deserved to have through music. I honored all the experiences and all the people and places that got me here.
When we were talking through the song order on the album, Ruben had said to me, "these are really hard songs to find an order for...they're all so different." And you know what, yes, yes they are. We all get to be as many things as we want to be. We are each only what we limit ourselves to be. As long as whatever is at our core are the must-haves and stick around through all the other emotions and experiences we delve through and the different hats we try on, then we're all pretty solid I say and more interesting for it.
In writing "Who Am I?", what I wound up with was an incredibly fulfilling journey in deconstructing the self, in owning all the pieces, in enjoying the messiness of it all, of feeling scattered and splintered in order to feel Whole and Free. And fuckkkk it felt good.
So as the pen and ink turned to blood and tears, it seemed like a truly perfect moment being captured on paper. It was messy and deconstructed. It was movement but had a core. I could see myself but had so many things to look through that were on the paper creating myself. It was soft and flowing, a little dark and slightly morbid as disjointed body parts appeared, it was bold and loud, smart and sassy, it makes you think and it's vibrant and happy and sad and mad. It was everything beyond anything Photoshop could have accomplished with just a single pretty picture.
Then I laughed out loud to myself as I realized this therapeutic journey literally decided to finalize in an ink blot, a Rorschach test, and one more suggestion that we all have our own burdens to bear and lives to comb through and realizations to make. And I chuckled because, fuck, we're all a little crazy. We look for the kind of crazy we can each live with and be fulfilled or entertained by. We each hope we're not the serial killer kind of crazy but the fun, zany, heart-on-your-sleeve crazy. To each their own and to each their brand of crazy nonetheless.
I hope with this album to inspire people to enjoy my own crazy life if it reflects theirs in any way and to own their shit; to enjoy the stories it's given me and the wholeheartedness with which I share them now and the lessons I've learned. I hope people take their own lessons from it or at least find some sense of unity in diversity. I hope someone listens out there and thinks, "Yesss. This makes sense to me. I am a hundred different parts and pieces. I too am more interesting then being just one neat, tidy person. I am a mess. A hot mess. And that's alright. Because I am a freaking piece of art."
So, it is with great pleasure I present to you an imperfect experiment in life, the cover of "Who Am I?" Coming to a digital platform near you this month.
(Artwork partial courtesy of Charleston dog, who loves chewing pens in his own brand of crazy. Technically, this is now truly a family project.).
